Collection: Flood Protection
Flooding is the UK's most common and most expensive natural hazard, and the window to do anything about it is before the water arrives. This collection covers practical home flood protection: door barriers, sandbag alternatives and airbrick covers that go up in minutes and actually hold water back.
Flood barriers and door guards
Flood barriers seal doorways against standing water far better than stacked sandbags, store flat in the garage, and reuse year after year. Measure your door openings before ordering, and remember water finds every gap — airbrick covers finish the job.
Sandbag alternatives
Modern sandless sandbags are light to store and swell into a full barrier in minutes when soaked — no sand, no shovelling, no trip to an empty council depot during a named storm. Keep a pack in the garage even if you're not in a flood zone; surface-water flooding doesn't check the flood map.
Flood FAQs
How do I know my flood risk?
Check your postcode on the gov.uk flood risk service and sign up for free flood warnings. Surface-water risk is worth checking even away from rivers.
Are sandbags or barriers better?
Barriers seal better, deploy faster and reuse; traditional sandbags are slow, heavy and single-storm. Sandless sandbags split the difference for gaps and low points.
How high should protection be?
Most products protect to 60–90cm. Beyond that depth, water pressure makes holding it out unrealistic — the plan shifts to moving valuables up and electrics off.
What should I do when a flood warning is issued?
Barriers up, airbricks covered, cars moved to high ground, valuables and documents upstairs, and your grab bag by the door in case you're asked to leave.
